Swine Flu…. (aka flu-like symptoms which result in a mass panic….!)
Aug 4th
Right, getting the jokes out of the way:
No, there is no “Oinkment”, I’m not covered in “Rashers” and I don’t have a tail / trotters…..!
Basically, I was away this weekend, and I think the combination of lack of sleep / lack of food knocked my immune system for six. Much to my mates disgust…..it wasn’t a monster hangover (knowing I had to drive the next day, I wasn’t willing to risk even a mild hangover!).
So what symptoms did I have that made the (lovely) Doctor on the phone diagnose me with this pig flu?
- Vomiting. Oh yes. There was a lot of that on Saturday night / Sunday morning
- Tiredness. Check. I actually slept for an hour in the car park before driving home, and have slept a grand total of 38 of the past 48 hours. Nicccce.
- Fever. Ooooooh yeah, I actually wore my gym stuff on the drive home on Sunday as I was sweating so much, it was gross.
- Loss of appetite: Since Saturday evening, I’ve eaten 6 pieces of bread and a cup-a-soup. Hardly filling
. Couldn’t even stomach a cup of tea or coffee. Now that’s when you know I’m not well! - Sore throat / blocked nose / cough / headaches / Sneezing : Check, check, check, check and check again.
- Aching Muscles : Yup. I put this down to injuries from Paintballing, but apparently not.
On a plus note, its “Improving” Swine flu, which means (duh), it’s getting better. And unlike the English, the Welsh don’t hand out Tamiflu to any old bean, and in my case the doc said it would probably make me feel worse, and I’m best just to see it through on paracetamol like stuffies.
Which draws me to this conclusion:
Over Christmas, I spent 5 days in bed, and very nearly missed New Years Eve, because of the common flu that goes round every year. During that time, I was shivering, sweating, not eating, aching and bed ridden. It was awful. And that was common old Flu that we all suffer from at least once every couple of years.
This? It’s nothing. Ok, so it knocked me down for a couple of days, but now (3rd day in), I’m feeling much perkier. As soon as I start eating properly again, I’ll be back up and running in no time. The fact I’m working from home tells me that it’s not what people press make it out to be (although, it takes a lot to get me home to start off with, being off “Ill” is something I hate). I probably won’t go back in to the office until i’m 100%, maybe not through choice, but it would stupid for me to put 50 other people at risk or whatever (Ignoring the fact I was in the office for 30 mins on Monday……I’m too stubborn to call in ill…..).
That is all, swine flu is lame. It’s mild, unseasonal flu that will knock you for 6 for a couple of days. Give me the choice between this and the Flu I had over Christmas….I’d porky it up anyday!
Fin.

Disclaimer:
That’s my opinion, and is probably right for like 90% of the people who think they have it. If you’re old / already ill / pregnant / whatever, call the god damn doctor!!
